Who she is.

Sandra Kimzey Wimbish is a visual artist who has traveled to and resided in several countries. She uses visual art to express the beauty of the people, animals and places she has encountered. Sandra grew up on the rural prairie land of Kansas and roamed the pastures on horseback, building forts and fighting imaginary hostiles. Recognizing very early that she was going to bankrupt them for lack of paper, her parents provided her with stacks of scrap paper--mostly discarded cattle papers--and encouraged her to sketch to her heart's delight. Which she did. Pretty much no surface was sacred---her work was produced, and subsequently erased from school desktops; can still be found in college textbooks and classroom notebooks. Her family often finds her sketching while listening to sermons at church, while riding in the car, or sitting just about anywhere with pencil and paper available.

Her desire to create art followed her from elementary school through formal training in high school and into adulthood. She has captured the people, landscapes and cultures of numerous exotic destinations, some of which have been published in books and brochures in several countries.

She currently lives in Albuquerque, NM.

What she does.

(Sandra has taught art students for over two decades, working with both introductory and advanced students. She takes great pleasure in seeing the joy of creative expression take hold of them! She has also organized and taught at arts camps.

While pen & ink, pencil and colored pencil, along with acrylic painting have defined her comfort zone and have been her mainstays, she loves to try her hand at new ways of expression. In recent years has delved into the world of textile dyeing; creating scarves, cloth napkins and other beautifully dyed items. She is also known for her tile mosaics which go outside their bounded backgrounds with flowing lines & sharp angles, bright colors and unique frames.

In 2019 she designed and completed a mural/tile mosaic project (after winning an art grant for it) at Laurel Hills Park in Raleigh, NC. Pictures of this project are under the Tile Mosaics tab.

How she thinks.

Artists have to create art. It is an essential part of their existence. It is often the way that they process life: grief, joy, hope, despair. With the ebb and flow of life comes the outpouring of design and expression. Each expression is unique, just as each experience in life is unique, never to be produced in the exact same way, with the exact same outpouring of emotion, nor yielding the exact same result.

Artists are not photo copiers; they are not fax machines. They are humans, inspired or compelled to create. They have found or are finding those stirrings from within, the ones that express themselves outwardly through creativity.

Where she works.

Always working on several different projects, this fall she has begun an American Wildlife series of ink and colored pencil works. The first several, including Mama Grizzly , Baby Black Bear and Winter Wolf Woods are now available in archival print form (under the Ink Drawings tab). Partly inspired by her love for wild animals, but primarily moved to the "do it now" list by her family's summer vacation in the amazing Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.

She is also continuing to develop works in a variety of mediums that feature beautiful people from around the world. Massai Beauty in Beads & Color  and Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony were recently completed, and are now available in archival print form (under the Pencil Drawings tab).

Artist statement.

Creativity is built into the core of who we are---not just us right-brained, left-handed artist types, but every one who identifies as a member of the human race. We may not recognize it in ourselves, but we still have a need for it; to observe and enjoy its bounty poured out from the depths of others, or to express it ourselves. In creating, we connect with the creator, and we often reveal things that were hidden, even from ourselves. There is a satisfaction in creating; "There, I've done it! It might not be significant to anyone else, but it is a part of me right there on that page/canvas/board."

These pages contain some of my creativity, my expression of ideas, my processing of questions and exploring the meaning of life (at least sometimes). I hope they bring some level of joy to you, and maybe, just maybe, stir you to pick up a pencil or pen or paintbrush and begin creating something uniquely you!
